From Struggle to Stability

Sun-baked fields stretch to the horizon in Bhandar Kumtha village. Here, Sunita Dilip Jadhav, 52, fights for her livelihood. With no other source of income and no land to call their own, her daily routine, as a labourer, begins at 10 in the morning and ends only when darkness descends, earning a meagre Rs 200 per day.
Their family of five, including a son and two daughters, has long depended solely on Sunita and her husband’s daily wages. With work sporadic throughout the year, survival becomes a constant battle, especially during seasons of drought when there’s no work to be found.

However, a glimmer of hope emerged with the intervention of Wells Fargo and WOTR, who sought to uplift the income of the region. With their support, Sunita embarked on a new venture – goat rearing. A financial support of Rs 14,000 allowed her to acquire two healthy goats, supplemented by an additional investment of Rs 10,000 from her own savings.

The goats proved to be a lifeline for Sunita’s family. Selling four kids brought in Rs 16,000, providing the much-needed financial flexibility. With the ability to sell goats as needed, they found a newfound sense of stability in their lives.

Looking ahead, Sunita envisions expanding her goat-rearing unit, recognising it as a more dependable source of income than labour. Despite their ongoing work in the fields, they allocate time to care for their goats, ensuring they graze alternately and maintaining a stock of fodder for night-time and emergencies. Additionally, with her earnings, she has constructed a shed to provide safety and shelter for the goats.
Since venturing into goat rearing, Sunita and her family have found relief from many of their struggles, marking a transformative chapter in their lives.
